The Joy of Living Out God’s Word
by Tricia Goyer
Sometimes God finds us in the most ordinary places on the most ordinary days. Two thousand years ago, a group of shepherds were doing their typical work when an angel choir announced God’s great gift. “And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night” (Luke 2:8). God chose ordinary men to take part in His great work.
For me, it was an ordinary Sunday. My pastor approached me after church. “Would you consider helping start a crisis pregnancy center?”
My first thought was, No! But I couldn’t shake from my mind the many Scripture verses I’d been reading, such as James 2:16: “If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?’”
My pastor’s question stirred me from a lull. I know what the Bible says, but am I actually going to do it? I had to make a choice.
Even though it was far out of my comfort zone, I told my pastor I’d help. And what did I discover? God had an amazing team of people who soon joined in the efforts. He just needed someone to get the ball rolling, and that person happened to be me.
The thing about God’s call is that it happens to ordinary people, on ordinary days, in ordinary ways. There is a world out there that needs to hear about the good news of Jesus, and so many times we read God’s Word but we’re not willing to actually do what it says.
Living out the Scriptures comes down to the one moment after I read God’s Word and pause. I then ask, “Lord, I know what your Word says to do … now what is one small way I can participate with you today?”
God used simple shepherds to spread the good news about Jesus. God used me to connect others to provide a safe, caring place for women in crisis. And anyone who dares to step out discovers the same: if God calls us to something, He will be there to help us and guide us. He will show up.
During the Christmas season, people become more open to hearing about God and the gift of His Son. How much more impactful if those who declare God’s Word are actually doing what it says: giving to the poor, caring for the orphans and widows, and loving the outcasts. We make God’s Word real to the world when we do what it says.
This season, let’s all pray and ask God who we can serve. He’ll always bring someone to mind. Perhaps you and I can make the announcement of the good news to others on ordinary days in ordinary ways.
