Living in a War Zone
by Tony Evans
The reason there are so many casualties among believers in spiritual warfare is that we have lost sight of the fact that we are in a perpetual state of warfare, which demands constant alertness. We let down our guards. We open ourselves to attack. We forget that we are warriors, not tourists, in God’s kingdom on earth.
An important principle to remember in life is this: just as God’s kingdom is spiritual in nature, so also is Satan’s. We shouldn’t be surprised, therefore, that these two kingdoms clash in the spiritual realm. You don’t have to be a Christian for very long to discover that the Christian life is a battleground and not a playground. This is because we are waging war in a conflict with a spiritual foe. One of Satan’s strategies, though, is to get us to forget that we are fighting a spiritual battle and instead to focus on the physical, tangible challenges we face.
Because so many Christians have been kept naïve of the real conflict at hand for so long, they assume people are their only problem. The Word of God teaches that what’s really going on in our lives, families, churches, and the world at large is a battle that sits outside time and space, but that determines what happens in time and space. It’s a spiritual battle. And although we live in a physical world, we live in a war zone. Recognizing this reality is the first step toward victory.
