The Miracle of Babies
by Grace Fox
Ting-a-ling-a-ling! The sound of a tinkling bell has rung through the intercom in the maternity ward five times in the past 36 hours. “Another angel has earned its wings?” I asked a nurse.
She smiled. “Another baby has just been born.”
Another baby; another celebration of life. And rightfully so, for little people, wrinkled and red, are proof that miracles happen every day. Who can fully grasp the complexity of these wee bodies emerging from mother’s womb to birthing room? Who can comprehend the personality, promise, and purpose woven into each one’s unique DNA?
My youngest daughter and her husband are tucked in a private room behind double doors and down a long hall. They’re laboring to bring their first child into the world and longing to meet this miracle their love has borne. And so I wait with anticipation for the next ting-a-ling-a-ling, hoping it’s meant for me.
I welcome this soon-to-arrive baby as my ninth grand-miracle, and I can hardly wait to lavish Grandma-love on her. C’mon—ring those bells!
