The Place Where Beauty Happens
by Dianne Barker
“You’re going out looking like that?”
Hubby knows I don’t even go to the mailbox without a tad of makeup. My sopping-wet hair left him befuddled.
“No worries. I’m off to the beauty shop.” Being a heavy hair-spray user, I always shampoo before my appointment.
“I’ll come home looking better,” I promised.
Nowadays, most people call it the hair salon. I still prefer beauty shop. Because that’s what happens there. After a professional touch, I come home looking better than I went in.
Like the repair shop where I take the sputtering auto. The mechanic applies his professional touch, and the car comes home running better.
I love the transformation that takes place in specialty shops.
There’s another place where beauty happens—my prayer closet. I enter, offering my sin, weakness, and hopelessness to the Lord. Receiving His miraculous touch, I leave better than I went in—cleansed, strengthened, renewed.
And Scripture indicates that in time, I’ll even look more like my beautiful Savior!
“For God, in his foreknowledge, chose them to bear the family likeness of his Son…” (Romans 8:29 Phillips).
His presence…the specialty shop where inner beauty happens. And much more.
“You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11 NIV).
Lingering in His presence kindles a cascade of His sweet fragrance over my life, and I become better than I was. Who knows? Someday perhaps someone will notice a striking resemblance to God’s precious Son.
