Words of Wisdom from Dad

Ang_MuseI said a bad word as a teen. And my dad said, “That’s not ladylike.”

I rolled my eyes as only a teen can do.

One day my dad said, “You know it takes more smarts to speak properly.”

I rolled my eyes as only a teen can do and walked away.

One day my dad said, “People who use gutter talk sure show their limited thinking.”

I rolled my eyes, walked away, and sighed. “That’s not the way the world works, Dad.”

One day my dad said, “Those people who learn to use a wide vocabulary have better opportunities.”

I rolled my eyes, walked away, and sighed tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. I grew up and found the career of my dreams because my dad said, “People like to hire smart people who speak properly, professionally, and politely.”

Angie & FamilyOne day my son said a bad word.

Somehow it just popped out of me, “You know, it takes more smarts to speak properly.”

He rolled his eyes as only a teen can do.

One day I remembered what I’d been taught and said, “People who use gutter talk sure show their limited thinking.”

He rolled his eyes at me. “Mom, that’s not the way the world works. Where did you hear that anyway?”

I couldn’t help myself. The words were ingrained. “People like to hire smart people who speak properly, professionally, and politely.”

One day my son said, “Mom, I have the career of my dreams!”

And I said, “Thank you, God, for my wise dad.”

Do you suppose my son’s son will hear the same words?
