How to be a Friend

Your friends are some of the most important people in your life. You spend tons of time with them. You laugh with them, goof around with them and share secrets with them. Because friends matter so much, it’s important to know how best to get along with them. What better place than the Bible to get some tips on how to be a good friend? Here’s a girl’s guide to friendship—with verses from the Bible to show you how to be the kind of friend everyone would want!

Be a forgiver.
Friends will hurt you. Even your best friends can let you down. (Remember, Jesus had friends who let Him down.) Because disagreements and hurt feelings are just a part of being friends with others, you must choose whether or not to forgive when someone hurts you. Proverbs 17:9 promises: “Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but whoever gossips about it separates friends.” An offense is when someone hurts you—lies to you, makes a joke about you, gets a boyfriend and blows you off. When that happens (and it will!), the Bible challenges you to let it go. If you do, that forgiveness will bond (glue together) a friendship. If you don’t forgive but instead stay bitter and angry, the Bible predicts that you’ll be saying goodbye to that friendship.

Don’t fall into the trap of having only one friend. Having a best friend is great, but that friend cannot be your only friend. One friend can only do so much, and if you lean on your one best friend for everything, you will end up disappointed, and she will end up frustrated. Instead, decide to be a friend to many different people. Get to know lots of kids in your school, church, and neighborhood. You can be friends with many of them. As a bonus, you won’t be known as that girl who only stays in one group of friends.

Best Friends with the Best Friend Ever.
In John 15:13, Jesus said, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” Did you know that Jesus died just for you? He literally gave His life so that those who believe in Him could have eternal life (life in heaven after you die) and a relationship with God that begins the moment you trust in Him. You will find no better friend than Jesus Christ. He will never stop loving you. He will never stop caring for you. He will never spread gossip, start rumors, or tell others your secrets. He will never run out of time for you. Never. As friends in your life come and go, Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. And because of that promise, you can count on His constant, loving friendship throughout your life. So get to know Him well; as you do, you will discover that He is the best friend ever.
