The God Who Can Be Known

Imagine how your life would change if you wholeheartedly believed not only that you can know God but that God is for you! The truth is, God reveals himself to us all the time, but often we’re not paying attention to his presence.

I remember coming to work one day and not realizing until lunchtime that I’d forgotten my lunch. Just then a co-worker came in with a sub sandwich he’d just bought, and he said, “Man, I forgot I brought my lunch today.” He ate his sub and gave me the lunch he’d brought from home.

Was that a coincidence? Or was that God providing for me that day?

A couple of years ago, I wanted a dog but was uncertain if I could even afford one, considering that shots and veterinarian visits would be required. So I prayed and got very specific about the dog. I wanted a dog that was

  • Hypoallergenic, because I am allergic to dogs that shed
  • A cockapoo, which is a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle
  • An older one that was already trained
  • A female, because females are less territorial than males
  • About medium size, maybe thirty pounds
  • One that I could afford to keep

41A5sdJlH1L._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_A few weeks later, I sensed God telling me to look online for a dog, and I found one at a nearby rescue that came close to filling my requirements. So I went and walked the dog around, but there just wasn’t a connection.

When I returned the dog, the woman at the front desk asked, “What are you looking for?” I said, “I really was hoping to find a cockapoo.” She said, “Just a minute. There was someone who called the other day about a cockapoo.” She looked around the desk and found an index card with information about the dog.

The woman said, “This lady called a few days ago, but we haven’t had time to process her dog. Give her a call and see if she has the right dog for you.”

The woman, Laura, owned a four-year-old female cockapoo who was well trained and who weighed about thirty pounds. Laura loved Jasmine, but she was on the road all the time. When I asked Laura how much she wanted for Jasmine, she said, “I just want her to have a good home!” And then she told me Jasmine was current on all her shots.

It would take more faith to believe this was coincidence than to believe God heard my prayer and answered it with Jasmine. Whenever I look at my dog, I am reminded of God. Whenever I look at Jasmine, I know God is faithful and loving and aware of my needs.

So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. (Romans 8:31-34 The Message)

In Acts 17:23, Paul says the days of ignorance are past. There’s no more guessing and groping in the darkness, looking for an unknown god. God has set the world ablaze with the light that has no darkness at all. The unknown god now lives among us as the Risen Christ.
