The Real You
by Rick Bezet
When something goes wrong in life, our first response may be to run and hide, to put up a mask, to pretend we’re not hurt or disappointed. But I believe God wants us to be real and rely on his strength, knowing that he will give us the strength to face anything that comes our way. He wants other people to see his character reflected through us—in all that we do, think and say, in how we handle the good times and the bad.
The Lord reminds us in Lamentations 3 that He “is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him” (Lam. 3:25). When the source of our true identity is Christ, then we live with real hope and discover the freedom to be authentic. When we’re real about who we are, the hope we offer is also real.
Look, you may be more confident that your best days are behind you! But God is working on something in you that is really good! When you hit the golf ball outside of the fairway, sometimes the rough is intense and all you can do is chip it back onto the fairway to start again. I promise you, though, when you get back into the zone of God, it’s a great place to be!
The Holy Spirit still speaks today. In fact, the Word says that He who began a good work IS ABLE to complete it. Philippians 1:6 says this, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it out and to completion.” Now that’s a confidence you can count on—being confident not in who you are or what you can do, but confident that He’s got this!
When you start growing in confidence and courageously stepping out in faith, you may even start doing things that you’re normally not comfortable with, stuff that maybe isn’t even like you, but IS like God.
You may even feel like you’re faking it, because who you are becoming doesn’t feel like who you’ve always been. But with the Spirit of God working out a new life in you, you start living a reality that you didn’t even know about before.
There’s the old you—definitely real! Maybe your friends used to know you as a deceiver, like Jacob. But when following Him becomes the focus of your life, everything changes! It is a new reality, and believe me, it is real! The more you walk in confidence of that reality, the more you become like Him, and the less you look like the “you” that you’ve always known. Then one day you’ll turn around and your friends might say, “Who are you? You ain’t real! I know you—you used to be a bum or whatever!” But you know that inside you’re changing. And confidence, not in yourself but in Him who lives inside of you, calls you to walk differently, to live differently, and that is…being real.
As a result of confidence in God’s love for us and in who He made us to be, we not only have the freedom to be who we are, but we also want to bring others into it as well! So, I challenge you to share your own story with someone who needs to hear it.
Every time someone sees or hears a story about a life changed, a healing, a marriage restored, or a family brought back together, it encourages them that the Lord can do that for them, too!
