The Story Behind the Song

Worship is such an amazing, powerful and beautiful thing. In the Psalms, it talks about God being enthroned upon the praises of His people. We love this picture, one of God establishing His Kingdom in a place of worship and praise. This is where the song “Holy Spirit” really started for us, it was a prayer, like Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6: “Let Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.” The song “Holy Spirit” is about us, turning our hearts, affection and awareness toward God’s presence.

ChampionSeven years ago as young worship pastors in a small church in central California, we began writing worship songs for our local congregation. We wanted fresh language for ourselves in worship, and we wanted anthems we could sing out together as a community. Our hearts were simply to lift up the name of Jesus, and to make room for God to have His way in our times of worship.

As we wrote songs, we hoped that somehow some of our songs, like “Holy Spirit,” would make their way into other churches, but we have been blown away with how God has used this particular song. To hear testimonies of people encountering God and getting healed and set free in times of worship have been incredible. The fact that a song about the Holy Spirit, called “Holy Spirit,” ended up winning a Grammy is so crazy and unbelievable.

Over the last few years, we have had the privilege of traveling and leading worship in many different cities across the nation and world. We’ve moved to Sacramento, CA, to be a part of a Jesus Culture church plant and have been overwhelmed by the incredible goodness and kindness of God. As we’ve grown and lived life, new songs have come out of those seasons. We’re more aware than ever that even though there is darkness in the world, hope is alive and God is moving in churches and cities everywhere. We recently got to lead worship in the city of Orlando only two weeks after the horrible tragedies that happened there. We weren’t sure if people would come out because of how fresh the events were and people had every reason to be afraid. However, people came and packed out the night of worship. It was honestly one of the most inspiring nights of leading worship we’ve ever been a part of. The Presence of God was so tangible, and the courage that people had to come and worship with everything they had was something I’ll never forget.

It’s moments like these that have inspired us in the writing of our newest album Champion. Our God is victorious, and He’s the one that fights our battles for us. These songs come from our experiences with God and our community over the last few years. We wanted to write declarations of hope and the incredible goodness of God. We wanted to tell the stories of our God who has overcome death through the resurrection of Christ and how He’s made a way for us where there was no way.

We’d like to hear from you. Please share your comments below or like us on your Facebook page. Be sure to check back each month for more articles and products available at your local Christian bookstore.

Thank you so much for this song, the first time I heard it I was organizing a worship service and normally before the service our technicians and sound engineers play some music in a way of keeping whoever enters in to feel welcome and God’s presence and here was this song “Holy Spirit you are welcome here” my spirit connected immediately with it. I am a song writer and a worship leader doing various ministries like taking Worship Schools on outreaches, Worship mentorship etc here in Uganda am here God do this and experiencing the tangibility of the Holy Spirit simply through a song is quite Overwhelming… I Love this song and God bless you… Today I am Covering it as one of the segments under the worship ministry I head called “THE LYRICAL MOMENT”. This ministry helps many worshippers to understand not just the story behind the song but the depth of the lyrics in the song, we dig deep into the song lyrics and am so honored to feature this song today as the Spirit compelled me to when I woke up. God bless you so much…

The song, Mountain, was visionary during the N. American, Carr Fire, which started 1 mile from my town, French Gulch, just west of Redding near the lake. We were evacuated for 21 days, and held onto hope that the town and our home would survive. Miraculously it did. The song had a prayerful meaning, and in the deepest point of grief over the surrounding losses, ushered in visions of angels surrounding my home and the town. The fire tried to get in 3 times, but was blocked. High on this mountain heaven invaded earth, and still does…through the flooding the following winter, the water stopped rising when I was in a 3am prayer. Residents said it was like a plug was pulled. The song, Mountain, is powerful and in the hands of a Great God and fervent prayer, stopped the fire and the floodgates of satan’s intended destruction.

This song has been knocking on my heart from the first time I heard it. I know there is and was more to it after hearing other ministries singing it. Is there an original version of the song “Holy Spirit” before it became popular by the internet/Christian performers….?
