Bombs Bursting in Air

Every July 4th prompts us to remember our country’s freedom. American flags and red, white and blue banners or balloons will be displayed throughout the USA. Our family, and I’m sure millions of others across America, will use this day to celebrate. Maybe it’s a barbecue with family and friends, or you will attend a parade or fireworks display. Today, Americans enjoy the benefits of those who willingly sacrificed their lives for our country’s freedom.

Imagine with me for a moment an American soldier on the battlefield and he hears the herald that they have won, as the last bomb bursts in the air. His first feeling must have been, it was all worth it. Then he grieves those who lost their lives for the cause. This is followed by the joy and anticipation of returning home to his family and living in this newfound freedom. I’m sure there was a moment when many expressed their gratitude to God Almighty for this victory.  In years to come, on the annual day of celebration, I can only imagine the memories that he would ponder.

How about us today? Do you have family or friends who served in the military and lived or died to keep our freedom? Before I sit comfortably on a grassy knoll in a folding chair and view the beauty of the “bombs busting in air,” I am committed to expressing my gratitude this year. Won’t you join me and reach out to someone who served our country and express your gratitude this year? Colossians 3:15 says, “Let the peace of God rule your heart . . . and be thankful.”
