Count It All Joy
“‘ . . .Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations . . . and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
Did you know Handel, one of the greatest composers in history, wrote his masterpiece, “Messiah,” when his health and finances had reached rock bottom? Paralyzed on the right side and going blind in one eye from a cataract, Handel suffered a significant financial loss as well. Planning to retire at the age of 56, Handel was suddenly commissioned by two sources, a wealthy friend and a Dublin charity, to compose a piece for a benefit performance.
Handel locked himself in his study for three weeks and was reportedly overcome in the Spirit. One of his servants later revealed Handel burst out of his study after this self-imposed seclusion, declaring that he had a great vision, “I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself seated on His throne, with His company of angels.”
Sometimes we feel we have nothing more to offer, the wellspring of health, wealth and creativity has dried up. But at the lowest point in Handel’s life, he received the greatest opportunity to glorify God. He accepted the commission, though unsure he could deliver.
God will use those who accept his Great Commission and will use His faithful servants no matter their age or weaknesses or shortcomings. “And he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.’ I shall therefore joyfully boast in my sufferings, that the power of The Messiah may rest upon me.”—2 Corinthians 12:9 (Aramaic Bible in Plain English)
There is no retirement plan in God’s kingdom. With His strength, we can deliver and fulfill whatever He calls us to do.
