Discovering Delights Amidst the Pandemic
by Grace Fox
During the height of self-isolation in my province, I resolved to get outdoor exercise at least once each day. Sometimes I jogged along a riverbank in our neighborhood. Other days I cruised the perimeter of a vacated schoolyard or walked several streets lined with near-empty corporate offices. To help keep my mind in a positive place, I looked for daily delights along each route.
One afternoon I found a snail on the sidewalk. For the first time in my life, I noticed the intricate detail on a snail’s shell. Another day, I knelt to watch a teeny green worm inch across a parking lot—the picture of perseverance, it was. I marveled at the beauty of a heron’s silhouette against the sunrise. And I stood amazed at the variety of tulips in bloom.
Each day became an opportunity to discover a new delight and experience joy again. While I’m not thankful for the pain COVID-19 has caused the world’s population, I’m grateful for how it opened my eyes to see evidences of God’s beauty and presence, even amidst a pandemic.
