Finding Hope in Crisis

In mid-2018, I submitted a devotional book proposal written for people in crisis. Publishers responded with polite rejections. I felt disappointed but figured that I’d revamp it and try again when I had time. Meanwhile, a recurring thought came to mind: Find a stronger title.

Fast forward to January 2020. One day four words popped into my head: Finding Hope in Crisis. My heart responded, “That’s it!”

I spent the next seven weeks immersed in missionary travels and caring for my ailing mother. The lockdown began the week I returned home. It cleared my calendar and gifted me with time.

My agent submitted my revamped, retitled proposal to several publishers. One said, “We had a similar project underway but it fell through. We want to publish this one in its place. How fast can the author write it?”

I swallowed hard and said eight weeks. In the end, the first draft took only twenty days despite my suffering from a broken tailbone and a shoulder injury that left me able to sleep only two or three hours each night.

Writing this book reminded me that God rules over every detail of our lives, even the disappointments. Nothing thwarts His purposes. His timing is perfect. He empowers us when facing seemingly impossible tasks.

Rose Publishing/Aspire Press will release Finding Hope in Crisis: Devotions for Calm in Chaos in early 2021. My prayer is that the truths I experienced while writing it will infuse readers with the hope they need to flourish under pressure and uncertainty.

What a beautiful reminder that God’s plans and path for my life is best.
