Get Some Rest

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”   -Mark 6:31 (NIV)

We are so busy doing things for God that we neglect simply being with God.

  • Yes . . . He has a plan for our lives.
  • Yes . . . He desires that we are actively engaged in spreading His word.
  • Yes . . . Jesus went about doing good things for the kingdom.
  • Yes . . . Jesus was actively engaged with those He came to serve and to those the Pharisees thought undeserving.

When we think about all that Christ accomplished, we sometimes worry we are not productive enough. We need to place one more Bible verse on Facebook, one more dinner for home meals program, one more look at our Bible study, one more package to send to the homeless . . . and the list is endless. If we do not accomplish all those things, we hear Satan’s blaring condemnation: If you love Jesus, you’ll do more than even what you’re asked.

Satan the accuser is quick to remind us how much Christ did. In three years time, He turned an entire world upside down and didn’t even have social media to help His cause.

What Satan does not tell us is—with all the Lord’s accomplishments, He knew the value of rest.

If an indestructible God found time and purpose in prayer and rest, how much more do we fragile humans need to refocus, put our cell phones down, turn off our computers and television sets, and simply rest. Listen to His voice on the breeze, His whisper in a gentle rain, or feel His warmth in the afternoon sun.

God calls us to put our head upon His shoulders. Today, will you follow Him into his perfect peace?
