How Do We Hear the Holy Spirit?

0 comments Posted on September 26, 2012

God wants to communicate with us. He asks us to pray to Him; and He desires that we listen for His quiet voice speaking to our heart. That’s because He wants to lead us every day in every aspect of our lives. But how do we hear the Lord? There are two ways.

First, God speaks to us through His Word. The more we read or hear His Word, the more we learn to identify His voice. In fact, if you don’t learn to hear God speaking to you from His Word, you will not be able to hear Him speak to your heart about the specifics of your life. Every time you read God’s Word ask Him to speak to you from it and He will give you a new level of understanding that you did not have before.

The second way God speaks to us is by His Holy Spirit. When we receive Jesus, He gives us His Spirit to dwell within us. “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His” (Romans 8:9). When you put your faith in Jesus, you are “sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13). His Spirit in you is the proof that you are His. When you say, “Lead me, Holy Spirit. Speak to my heart” and listen carefully for the voice you have learned to identify in the Spirit-breathed Word of God, you will soon begin to recognize the Holy Spirit leading you into all He has for you.
