How to Make Major Decisions with Confidence
My husband and I have faced several life-altering decisions in the past 17 years. One came in 1996. It meant trading a civil engineering career and income for a career Christian camping ministry and living on faith support. It also meant selling our four-year-old waterfront home, uprooting our three elementary-aged kids, and moving from urban USA to a small Canadian island.
Another significant decision came in 2007 when a U.S.-based ministry called International Messengers asked us to launch their Canadian office. Doing so meant leaving the camp ministry to recruit, train, and lead short-term mission teams to Eastern Europe. It meant leaving free housing to find an affordable home on a very limited budget. And it meant doing so in our 50s. Were we too old to start something new? Were we crazy to even consider the change?
Huge decisions can be scary and paralyze us into inaction. This happens when we focus on the unknowns rather than on God’s faithfulness and His promises to direct our steps.
Psalm 32:8 is one such promise that encouraged us to say yes to International Messengers despite the unknowns. “The LORD says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you’” (NLT).
Knowing our loving Savior was guiding us settled our uncertainties. We moved forward trusting Him to advise us through His word, through godly friends, and through circumstances. We asked Him to redirect us if we headed the wrong direction and to open or close doors as necessary to fulfill His plan.
My husband and I surrendered our wills to God’s, and He fulfilled His promise. We followed the path laid out before us, and we’ve never looked back.
Yes, major decisions can sometimes feel daunting, but let’s remember that our heavenly Father promises to guide, advise, and watch over us as He leads us on the best pathway for us. We can trust and not be afraid. Therein lies the confidence we need to move forward.
