How to Overcome the Fear for our Kids’ Well-Being

It was my eldest’s first day of kindergarten. Fear regarding Matthew’s ability to make friends at school had troubled me for weeks, but it commandeered my thoughts as I watched him board the big yellow bus and wave goodbye. That’s when reality dawned: school buses don’t have seatbelts.

Oh my goodness! What’ll happen to Matthew if the driver brakes suddenly? I wondered. Then I did what any fear-driven mother would do: I jumped in my car and followed the bus (discreetly, of course), as though doing so could ensure my son’s safe arrival.

At age 18, Matthew joined a sea-faring ministry that took him around the world for three years. Fear might have consumed me had I not learned to apply Philippians 4:6-7: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Fearful thoughts about Matthew’s safety entered my mind frequently, but I refused to entertain them. I chose instead to tell God my concerns, and I thanked Him for His presence in my son’s life. Doing so required mental discipline, but the dividends paid off as God’s peace guarded me from fear’s onslaught.

Moving from Fear to FaithTwenty-five years have passed since Matthew’s first day of kindergarten. He’s now 30 years old. He has a beautiful wife and five children whose ages span from three weeks to five years.

Satan would love to trouble me with questions such as, “What if Matthew loses his job?” and “What if his marriage suffers from parenting stresses?” I counteract his evil intent by applying Philippians 4:6-7, and I experience peace.

Take these scriptures to heart, my friend. When fearful thoughts about your kids loom large, refuse to entertain them. Instead, tell God your concerns and thank Him for all He’s done already. Therein lies the pathway to peace and the freedom from fear.
