2020 will be remembered as a year of fears and worries. A worldwide pandemic causing loss of jobs and a shaken economy was further exacerbated by raging forest fires, hurricanes, and an election that left our country divided. Yet, the King James Bible encourages us 103 times, “Be not afraid” or “Fear not.”  So what’s the solution when our world is spinning out of control? It’s simple. Fear not. If you lived this past year in a cloud of fear, leave your fears in 2020. And begin 2021 with a new perspective on fear.

The Bible clearly tells us not to fear because He is with us. No matter what we face, He is by our side. The New International Version (NIV) translation of the Bible shares 21 exhortations stating, “I am with you.” What a comfort to know as we face so many uncertainties in life.

Fear is a normal emotion that activates and elevates cortisol in our body. Occasionally, this can be beneficial. For example, if you were afraid because a wild animal was chasing you, that cortisol would enable your body to run faster. However, when we are constantly living in a state of fear and worry, our immune system becomes compromised weakening our ability to fight disease. We are cautioned to lay our fears and concerns at His feet, and not let fear drive our lives.

God instructs us to fear one thing above all—only Him! In Proverbs 9:10 (NKJV), Solomon warns, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The fear of God is a worshipful, reverent attitude and an acknowledgement of His sovereignty, power, and preeminent position in our lives. Commands to fear God are common in His Word and viewed in a constructive way.

As Christians, our eternal destination is secure no matter what happens in this life. So say goodbye to 2020, and begin 2021 with a new perspective to please Him and carry out His will in our lives. Slam the door on 2020 for a new day is coming!  This reverent fear of God should drive our lives and is critical in our daily walk with God.
