Let Us Be Thankful, Truly

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” Hebrews 12:28-29

The writer of Hebrews quotes Deuteronomy 4:24 at the end of his statement: “For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” This verse finds itself in the middle of a directive from God Himself about how idolatry is to be strictly forbidden.

Why do I mention this?

To worship God the way the writer of Hebrews says to, we must be thankful. Truly thankful people, when you think about it, are that way because they do not believe they deserved whatever it was they received.

People who are not thankful believe they deserve something. They believe they are worthy enough to receive it. They then develop a false sense of themselves. This is where pride, boasting, selfishness and all the other “acts of the sinful nature” mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21 start to manifest themselves.

For when we have the right belief about ourselves (we truly deserve nothing) and a right understanding of God (He is a consuming fire when it comes to sin but a God of love for people who repent of their sin and follow His commands wholeheartedly), then true worship can begin.

In addition, the writer of Hebrews said that we who truly follow Jesus also are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. He’s not talking about whether or not God’s kingdom can withstand assaults from the enemy only. He’s also talking about how God’s kingdom cannot be shaken off its foundations too. Hence, the quote from Deuteronomy 4:24. God’s not going to change His mind. He makes that very clear in Deuteronomy 4. God tells the Israelites, “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you” (v. 2).

God’s kingdom cannot be shaken off its foundations nor attacked so harshly that it crumbles. Those who are truly thankful can claim this kingdom as their own and worship God only as truly thankful people can, in reverence and awe.

Therefore, let us be truly thankful as we enter this season we call Thanksgiving.
