Each day, we live the legacy we want to leave. In my newest book, 7 Simple Skills for Every Woman: Success in Keeping It All Together, I reflect back on one of the most strategic choices we made as new parents, that is to create a family moniker or crest that functioned as an inner compass to each member of our family.

Here is a drawing of our family moniker:

Farrel Moniker

Our moniker was created when Bill was a youth pastor and we were praying about what we wanted for our children. The details of how it was created is in 10 Best Decisions a Parent Can Make, but in short, we wanted our children to be Learners, Leaders who Love God. The two interconnected hearts symbolize our commitment to keep our promises, especially in relationships. The cross with the star means that we believe each person has a God-given passion or calling and when we are in correct relationship with God, God then empowers us to reach our God-given potential.

7 Simple Skills for WomenWe also added a family MOTTO:

“Those who honor God, God honors” 1 Sam. 2:30

Before any of us makes a decision, we check in with that inner GPS and ask, Does this show honor to:

CrestCreating a moniker can be as simple as designing a crest or emblem with symbols that answer this question:

What 4 values do you want passed on to the next generation?

Place a symbol for each word/trait in each section of the crest, then post this in your home. Now, years later, what is the long term result of having a mission, motto and moniker? Bill and I have been happily married for 35 years. All three of our sons love and serve God and have married beautiful women who also love God. 3 John 1:4 echoes in our hearts, and it is our prayer you will see it become fruit in your family too: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth”
