Living the Dream
“What do you want to do after high school?” I asked my senior, a teenager with many talents but a kid who dislikes school.
“I don’t know,” he said, shrugging a shoulder. “Definitely not college.”
It’s funny how we expect our kids to know what they ‘want to be’ when they grow up. I struggle with this, and I’m in my forties with a college degree!
I’ve taken many personality and career-related quizzes to find out what type of occupations might interest me, and I’ve worked a range of jobs, including teaching three-year-olds, assisting oral surgeons, and organizing treatment plans for an orthodontist.
Over the years God has put many dreams on my heart. Marriage. Babies. Owning a home. He answered my prayer when we wanted to adopt, and He spurred my spirit to study the craft of writing, a career I now can see myself doing for a long time. But I also have hobbies. I enjoy helping friends find real estate to buy or rent, and I can imagine myself designing kitchens and baths thanks to our recent remodels.
Honestly, I’ve always thought of myself as a dedicated worker, but not ‘great’ at anything. You know, a ‘jack of all trades but master of none’ kind of person. The good news is God doesn’t see me that way. He views me as a person with significance. Every day I’m living the dream because He made me for a purpose. If I do what He sets me to do, big or small, I am counted as faithful.
Isn’t it comforting to know God sees us as valuable?
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 NLT
