No Reason to Fear
by Grace Fox
On Christmas Day 2019, I received an unexpected phone call. “Mom experienced stroke-like symptoms this morning,” said my sister-in-law. “Doctors have diagnosed her with an egg-sized benign brain tumor.”
The diagnosis led to radiation treatments. Radiation caused hair loss and extreme fatigue. Then came COVID, which led to Mom’s isolation in her seniors’ condo. She grew increasingly weak during that time alone.
My mom loved the Lord and His Word. During an early summer phone conversation, I asked, “How do you feel in your heart about everything that’s happening to you?” Without a moment’s hesitation, she said, “I am not afraid. I trust Him.”
Mom’s life proved those words true. Her condition deteriorated and she was hospitalized, but she never complained or asked, “Why me?” Instead, she faced an unknown future with strength and dignity until the moment she moved from earth to heaven in early October.
This year has presented numerous challenges of every kind. God alone knows what 2021 will bring, but of one thing I’m confident: Immanuel has come and walks with us. No matter what the future holds, we need not be afraid. We can trust Him.
