As newlyweds, we left our first apartment in Ohio to move to California. San Diego was my dream. No more frigid weather and snow.
I’d been searching for God. So, after we moved into a furnished studio, we set out to look for a church. We found an ugly pink stucco, two-story building that looked nothing like a church, but boasted a sign in front. I had such a strong compulsion, the next Sunday morning we visited.
Many young people climbed the stairs to the old building. I couldn’t pinpoint what made them seem peculiar to me. Mostly young people our age arrived in droves. I wasn’t sure I liked their peculiarity.
A friendly couple motioned us to sit with them. The service was similar to those we’d attended in Columbus—until the dynamic pastor rose to speak. He spoke of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Chills flashed down my spine. I’d never heard much of the first coming of Christ, but Pastor Tim LaHaye took my breath away speaking of things I’d never heard. He closed with an invitation. Anyone not ready to be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, could pray and invite Jesus into their life.
My husband and I both prayed. That began my new life in Christ. It’s been an amazing journey filled with excitement and adventure. And far sooner than either of us could have guessed, God called my young husband to Himself.
As I stood at Don’s casket, I was so thankful I knew that he waited in Heaven for me. I’m thankful God’s Holy Spirit calls people to Himself. And those peculiar people? They turned out to be the most loving I’d ever known.
