Speaking God’s Truth to Little Ones
In my early twenties—fresh out of college, I taught preschool for several years. I was impressed at how eager young children are to learn new things, and how quickly they learn. The other thing I realized was that young children believe what you tell them, and that it’s important to speak positive and truthful words that build them up and shape their perspective of themselves and the world around them. Young children are also capable of understanding stories from the Bible and how they apply to our everyday lives.
I have had the privilege of writing for this young audience for over 25 years. From Bible stories and devotionals, to picture books and beginning reader books, my purpose in writing has been to teach little ones that God loves and cares for them very much.
My latest book is Our Daily Bread for Preschoolers—90 Big Moments with God. This book, which I co-authored with my daughter, Teri McKinley, offers a fun way to introduce young children to God. Each reading features a Bible verse that’s easy to understand, a practical question that’s fun to answer, and a short rhyming prayer to help children learn how to talk to God. The daily devotions highlight stories from the Bible, as well as teaching children about God’s character and promises. And now that I am a grandmother to five little ones, I have five more reasons to keep writing!
