Storms enter our lives without warning. One year ago, my son told me his wife hadn’t paid the mortgage on their lovely home for the last six months. The company foreclosed, and he and his family moved into our upstairs loft and guest rooms.

Though I love having my son’s family so close, our living situation brought stormy weather into all our lives.

I reflect on a storm that took place long ago. It’s recorded in Mark 4:35-41. Jesus was with the disciples in a boat. A strong gale arose. Fierce waves filled the boat with water and the storm turned deadly. Jesus was asleep. The disciples thought they were about to die. They had seen His miracles, but they didn’t trust Him for their safety. Jesus got up and rebuked the wind. Actually, the disciples deserved His rebuke. The wind died, and the sea calmed. Jesus used the storm to teach the disciples to trust Him.

God uses the storm in my family’s life to teach us all to trust Him. He’ll calm our storm at just the right moment—but not until we finally trust Him alone. As we trust, He shows His power. Using this trial, He’s transforming us.

Thank you, Father, for the storms you bring into our lives. My family lives upstairs, and we sometimes run into difficulty, but God is teaching us to trust Him during the storms of our lives.
