The Butcher, the Baker…and Brantley

We sat waiting on our meals in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, at Blackbeard’s Inn. Our middle daughter and her family were with us for a day of our four day, mini-vacation. Our daughter’s two children, Addisyn (5) and Brantley (3), sat opposite each other. Brantley colored his paper placemat.

Without warning, Brantley dropped his crayon and started to get out of his chair.

“Hey, buddy,” Brantley’s dad said, “where are you going?”

“I need to see the baker.” He wriggled down and hit the floor with his feet.

“Buddy, you need to get back in your chair,” his daddy said. He placed his arm around his son to prevent his little linebacker from leaving the table.

“No, Daddy. I need to see the baker.”

“Why do you need to see the baker?”

Brantley looked toward the back of the restaurant. “I need to talk to him.” He then attempted to slip under his daddy’s arm.

His daddy picked him up, plopped him back down in his seat, and explained how visiting the baker wasn’t a good idea at the moment.

Watching and laughing at this unfold, I turned to my daughter and said, “You’ve been watching those cooking shows again, haven’t you?”

She smiled. “Just about every day.”

I could see the little wheels turning in his head. Guy and Adam just walk into the kitchen and start talking to the chef. Why can’t I?

Isn’t it amazing how little eyes are always watching, always soaking in their surroundings, and as a result, imitating much of what they see? You never know what sinks in until they try to get down out of their proverbial chair and announce intentions to “talk to the baker.”

Who are the little ones around you trying to talk to?
