The Joy of Family and Children’s Books

Family has always been important to me. I’ve been close to my siblings and our relationship is both family and friends. Because my brother is a professor at Western Michigan University and his wife an associate provost there, he now lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan close to Lake Michigan. I live on the opposite side of the state in a metro Detroit suburb. This means our time together is tested by a long distance drive.

Carsten reads my book. But distance doesn’t stop us. This week my husband and I spent two days visiting them, and especially to see his two grandchildren who live in the area. They are darling and so much fun. I often bring each child a small gift, and most often it’s a book. We read the books, and though Carsten is only about six or seven months old, he was entertained by the book’s sound effects. I love children’s books, and though I write adult Christian fiction, I still have a child’s heart.

Mira is three and loves my books, which her grandpa keeps on his office bookshelf. She pulls them out and flips through them as if reading the novels. Now Carsten, who crawls, does too. Mira decided to give me a gift before she went home. She vanished for a few minutes and returned carrying the gift bag I had used for her book. She smiled and handed me the present, a stack of my old novels. Needless to say, grandpa had to eventually regain ownership without her realizing, but it was sweet and a good laugh.

Treasures of Her HeartOn rare occasion, I do book signings and mainly when invited by an independent bookstore and especially an independent Christian bookstore. You can guess where you will find me when I have a chance between customers. Yes, in the children’s book section. I can’t resist.

Multi-award-winning novelist, Gail Gaymer Martin has 55 published Christian novels with four million books in print. Among her awards, she has received the ACFW Carol and Romantic Times Reviewer Reviewers Choice. Co-founder of American Christian Fiction Writers, she is a keynote speaker and workshop presenter.
