Time to Travel Light
by Elaine Helms
She asked as only a sister can, “Why are you keeping that?”
We were looking at a fading spumoni wrapper from a treat bought in Italy on a trip with our parents. I had to admit, I didn’t know why I had kept that wrapper, let alone everything else in that old scrapbook!
Most of the contents were yellowing, dry and brittle. The memories are still vivid, but the tangible evidence of those events was not. My sister and I continued to discuss other old things I found while cleaning out that closet. I asked, “Why do we hang on to memorabilia and other stuff? Do we think we will never have another happy experience?”
It made us think of the little girl who would not turn loose of her plastic pearls when her daddy wanted to give her the real thing. What is our Father God trying to show us that we need to turn loose of to receive precious gifts He longs to give us?
Paul says in Galatians 5:19-21, “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you . . . that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
We both decided that it is time for us to simplify and travel light as we pass through this world. The trash needs to be emptied, both physically and spiritually. With hearts and hands now clean and wide open, we want to receive the best gifts like: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Yes, we agreed, it is time to travel light as we anticipate the heavenly home that our Father is preparing for us, His daughters.
