When the Unexpected Shows Up
After talking about it for almost a year, Hubby and I finally went deep sea fishing last weekend. I had never been and it was Hubby’s first time in many years. The joke in our family is that when he shows up, fish laugh and swim far, far away. So he boasted that this time, he planned to catch a 500 pound tuna – in a mere 25 feet of water.
We figured if we caught anything, it would be a bonus. The weather couldn’t have been nicer and we were lucky enough to be on the shady side of the boat. I caught my first (and only) fish in the first ten minutes. Hubby caught three in rapid succession.
Then his rod dipped, caught, and bent lower and lower. He started reeling it in, faster and faster. Those fishing alongside us stopped to watch. He had something heavy at the end of his line, no question.
His arm grew tired but finally, his prize appeared and he hauled it on deck. He’d landed…a rock. A beautiful piece of coral. We all burst out laughing and the mate declared it one of the top three rocks anyone had ever landed – but he had to throw it back.
We’ll laugh about this for years to come. Sometimes, you’re expecting one thing, but something completely unexpected appears. If you can, take a minute to laugh and appreciate the surprises life – and God – sends our way.
