Where on Earth Is the Rest?

I’m an ordinary woman with a huge need for God’s power and peace in my life. No problem recognizing His power. Peace sometimes is touch-and-go.

Life becomes too much. Too many cares and snares. Once I cried, “Lord, where on earth is the rest?”

He answered, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV).

Years ago, I began journaling during my devotional time. Often I came to my prayer cubby feeling overwhelmed. I found listing my circumstances that day a good way to corral thoughts bombarding my mind and making me feel restless.

Some concerns were major and some minor—but big enough to drain my emotional energy and disturb my peace. One day, the sixteenth note on the list said: “and the dog limps.” One more thing to deal with—call the vet.

In my weariness, those awesome words of Jesus surrounded me. Come to me. You’re weary and burdened. I’ll give you rest. I gave Him the list.

Are you weary, carrying a heavy load today? Is your peace touch-and-go? List your cares, give them to Jesus, and find rest. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone. My hope comes from him” (Psalm 62:5 NIV).
