“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is a saying that we have all heard since childhood but that we know isn’t necessarily true. For anyone that has been bullied, put down, yelled at, or even harshly criticized, you know the heavy weight that words can carry.
Words have a real power behind them, and they can do a lot more than you realize. There’s a lot of scripture that echoes this truth.
Matthew 12:34 says, “Whatever is in your heart determines what you say” (NLT). If you fill your heart with love and joy, your words will reflect that. But if we fill our hearts with anger and hate, our words will reflect that instead. Filling our hearts with the love of Christ is the only way to make sure we speak truth.
The next time you find yourself using words you shouldn’t, make sure you take a step back and consider what lies in your heart.
They’ve made me feel like a prisoner
They’ve made me feel set free
They’ve made me feel like a criminal
Made me feel like a king
They’ve lifted my heart to places I’d never been
And they’ve dragged me down back to where I began
Words can build you up
Words can break you down
Start a fire in your heart or put it out
Let my words be life
Let me words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to you
You can heal the heartache
Speak over the fear
God your voice is the only thing we need to hear
I wanna speak your love
Not just another noise
I wanna be your light
I wanna be your voice
